Answers about TCPM, concrete poles, testing and working with us.

TCPM is responsible for supporting the manufacturing, quality control, testing, inspection, and supply of concrete poles used in electricity distribution and related infrastructure projects.

Yes. TCPM may conduct quality-control and inspection activities for concrete poles manufactured by approved or relevant suppliers, subject to the applicable procurement and technical requirements.

The website’s Projects / News & Updates section can provide information about ongoing and completed activities, inspections, testing, supplier engagements, and other TCPM initiatives.

Latest announcements, notices, projects, and other updates can be published in the News & Updates section of the TCPM website.

TCPM deals with various concrete pole sizes and specifications, including 10 m, 13 m, 15 m and 17 m poles, depending on project requirements and approved technical specifications.

Concrete poles are primarily used for:
  • Electricity distribution networks
  • Transmission and power infrastructure
  • Street lighting
  • Telecommunication infrastructure
  • Supporting overhead electrical and communication cables
  • Other infrastructure applications requiring durable pole structures

Concrete poles offer several advantages, including:
  • High structural strength
  • Long service life
  • Resistance to termites and rot
  • Low maintenance requirements
  • Good resistance to weather and environmental conditions
  • Reliable performance in electricity distribution networks

Yes. Concrete poles can be used to support telecommunication and fibre-optic infrastructure, subject to the applicable structural and installation requirements.

The service life depends on the design, materials, manufacturing quality, environmental conditions, loading, transportation, installation, and maintenance. Properly designed and manufactured concrete poles can provide a long service life.

TCPM ensures quality through technical inspections, material verification, factory inspections, testing, quality-control procedures, and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) before poles are approved for deployment.

A Factory Acceptance Test is an inspection and testing process conducted at the manufacturer's premises to verify that concrete poles meet the required technical specifications and quality requirements before they are accepted for use.

Depending on the applicable specification, testing may include:
  • Visual inspection
  • Dimensional verification
  • Concrete strength testing
  • Deflection testing
  • Proof-load testing
  • Ultimate-load testing
  • Reinforcement and prestressing-wire verification
  • Inspection for cracks, voids and other workmanship defects

Inspections and testing may involve TCPM technical representatives together with representatives from the relevant utility, manufacturer, project owner, or other authorized stakeholders.

Poles that do not meet the required technical requirements are not approved for deployment. The manufacturer may be required to investigate the cause, implement corrective measures, and present the affected poles for further inspection or testing where applicable.

Concrete poles are manufactured and assessed against the applicable TANESCO/TCPM technical specifications, approved project requirements, and relevant national or international standards, depending on the particular application.

A manufacturer can engage TCPM through the appropriate procurement or technical process and provide the required documentation, production information, specifications, and testing arrangements for inspection.

Interested suppliers and manufacturers should follow the applicable supplier registration, prequalification, procurement, and technical approval procedures. Further information can be obtained through TCPM's procurement or contact channels.

TCPM's role is primarily focused on technical, quality-control, manufacturing, inspection, and infrastructure-related activities. Availability of poles for individual purchase depends on the applicable procurement arrangements.
